The third annual giant pumpkin weigh-in will kick off a fun-packed October at the Waimea Town Market on the Parker School Campus. The weigh-in, starting at 10 a.m. on October first, will feature pumped pumpkins from a number of island growers, all competing for the grand prize ribbon and a $100 cash reward. Ribbons are also awarded to individuals and to school groups in this entertaining competition that seeks to reacquaint folks with the joys of digging in the dirt.
Chef Amy Ferguson will visit the market on October 22 to demonstrate preparation of a meal using fresh market ingredients. Ferguson, an inductee into the Hawaii Regional Cuisine Hall of Fame at its recent inaugural meeting, is well known locally for the delicious meals she created at her restaurant, O’s Bistro, in Kailua-Kona. Since closing the restaurant, she has operated Cater Hawaii, and continues to dazzle the palates of Big Island residents and visitors.
Dogs will be kings (and queens and everything else) at the market on October 29, as the Halloween Hounds parade returns to community acclaim. This hilarious event, now in its third year, will provide everyone with great morning entertainment as the dogs compete for fancy ribbons and delectable treats. If you happen to have a canine acquaintance, please ask him or her to put on a costume, and join in the fun. Market vendors will decorate their booths for the day, as well, competing with the dogs – and among themselves – for the attention of visitors.
